Earlier today, Amazon took the wraps off its latest Alexa-powered device, the Amazon Echo Show. The new smart home accessory provides all the best features of Alexa and previous Echo’s, along with a 7-inch display, front-facing camera, and some extras.
Some of these extra features include the ability to make video or voice calls with others who are using Alexa-enabled devices. This may have got you thinking that Amazon was planning to announce calling and messaging services across multiple Alexa devices, and that’s exactly what Amazon did.
So how this will work once it’s officially launched is that anyone who has an Amazon Echo-branded product can make and receive phone calls or messages. If you don’t have an Echo device, you can still do this, provided that you install the Amazon Alexa app from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store.
There is a bit of a catch here, though, as both parties will need to have the app installed on their device of choice. On the bright side here, all voice calls or messages are completely free, so you won’t be charged a subscription fee or anything on a monthly basis.
As we stated earlier, Amazon didn’t share any specifics as to a release for this new functionality. However, I would put my money on seeing this launch around the same time that the Amazon Echo Show is released (end of June). Let us know what you think about this feature, and if you could see yourself using it.
