Why sharing your #10Concerts on Facebook is an awful idea
Although we don’t normally discuss the latest trends circulating social media, a new one could be putting your security at risk. If you’ve spent more than a few minutes on Facebook, you may have come across a friend or family member taking part in the “10 Concerts” game.
Also known as “10 concerts +1 lie,” the game sounds innocent enough, with participants listing off 10 concerts they’ve been to while having their friends guess which one is a lie. Aside from being a little annoying, what could possibly go wrong?
The problem is that many banks, credit card companies, online services, etc. use “What was the first concert you attended?” as a popular security question when you’ve forgotten or need to reset your password. Someone with more malicious intent could easily take your “10 concerts” post and potentially gain access to your iCloud, email, social or any number of accounts if one of those answers matches up with your security question (a reason why it’s best to answer with a lie).
Sure, it’s a long shot but it’s a big reason why sharing all of your personal information online — no matter how small or innocent that may be — isn’t always the best idea. If nothing else, it’s better to err on the side of caution and consider staying out of this latest Facebook trend.
