Now we know the real reason why Verizon brought back unlimited data

Verizon shocked many of us back in February when it decided to bring back its unlimited data plan. Initially it was thought that this was just in response to T-Mobile’s re-entry into the world of unlimited data, but it seems the problems were much bigger.

Big Red held its earnings results call today, and stated that it lost almost 400,000 postpaid subscribers in the first 6 weeks of this year. That’s a staggering loss, even for a carrier as large as Verizon.

Despite posting an overall loss of customers for the quarter, Verizon gained a total of 109,000 customers after the launch of its new plans. This helped to adjust the final quarterly numbers to almost 290,000 subscribers.

It’s no secret that T-Mobile has pushed the limits of its competition, but in this case, the move to unlimited data may have actually helped Verizon. It will be interesting to see how the rest of 2017 shapes up, and what other changes will be made to our phone plans over the course of the year.
