There have been rumors for a while now that Samsung is planning to refresh its Gear VR line-up and today, Samsung vice president Sung-Hoon Hong says that the company is working on two new VR systems. The first is a successor to the Gear VR line-up and the second is a mixed reality device that functions similarly to Microsoft’s HoloLens.
Hong appeared at a Virtual Reality Summit in California this week to talk about the future of VR. During that talk, Hong stated that Samsung is working on a new light field engine that is capable of producing realistic holograms. According to him, these holograms “look really touchable” and Hong believes that augmented reality has many more business applications than virtual reality.
Samsung’s new technology will likely appear at Mobile World Congress next year in Barcelona in February.
