Developer preview of Android Things now available

Today Google is releasing a developer preview of Android Things, a new way to build Internet of Things products that utilize the power of Android. Android developers can harness the power of Android APIs and Google services to deliver a smart device that can change the way the world interacts with devices.

Several hardware products available on the market already will support this new Android Things platform, including Intel Edison, NXP Pico, and Raspberry Pi 3.

In addition, Google has announced it is updating its Weave platform to make it easier for all manner of devices to connect to the cloud and interact with services like Google Assistant. Smart devices like Philips Hue and Samsung SmartThings already use Weave, but other Internet of Things manufacturers like Belkin WeMo, LiFX, Honeywell, Wink, TP-Link, and First Alert are working to incorporate Weave into their own products.

Right now, the Weave Device SDK includes support for light bulbs, smart plugs and switches, and thermostats. Google says in the coming months, it will be working to support additional device types with this new framework.
