Samsung Galaxy S7 will jump straight to Android 7.1.1 Nougat

Samsung is currently beta testing the Android 7.0 Nougat upgrade for the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge with lucky testers, so they’re well on their way to delivering the goods to everyone.

But Google works fast, and 7.1.1 is already out and about for Pixel and Nexus devices, so many are curious about how long they’ll have to wait for the incremental update to arrive. Thankfully, there won’t be much of a wait at all. Samsung is apparently communicating that their initial Android Nougat release will begin with Android 7.1.1.

Samsung would really have no good reason not to include 7.1.1. They’ve already implemented Nougat’s core, and 7.1.1 stands to bring little more on top of it, save for some bug fixes, minor improvements, and a couple of additional features. As such, it likely won’t add much more time to the implementation and testing process, and it means you’ll (hopefully) be on the newest version of Nougat you can be on when you first get it.

Unfortunately, we’re still not sure when to expect that update to arrive. Samsung’s testing periods haven’t been super lengthy in the past and we’d bet that unlocked models will see it by the end of the year, but don’t bet the farm on that, and if you’re on a US carrier then you probably want to curb your expectations now and look to early 2017.
