CES typically isn’t too plentiful in terms of phone launches, but TV is one area that gets a ton of attention. That makes it the perfect stage for non-TV makers who make companion products, too.
Apparently, NVIDIA wants to be added to that list. SlashGear is reporting that a new SHIELD Android TV device is on the way, and that it’ll be revealed at CES 2017.
Details are scarce, naturally, but it’s said NVIDIA’s goal with this refresh is to support 4K content. This would be a wise move considering more and more emphasis is being placed on the new resolution jump.
Consider Sony, who has released the first gaming console which supports 4K gaming (albeit in slightly neutered fashion) in the PS4 Pro. You also have a wealth of 4K TV and movie content being released, with Google having just launched a horde of new 4K movies at Google Play. NVIDIA’s desire to be at the forefront of this resolution demands new hardware, so we aren’t at all surprised that they’re looking to jump on the wagon.
NVIDIA’s desire to be at the forefront of this resolution demands new hardware, so we aren’t at all surprised that they’re looking to jump on the wagon. And to be honest, it has been a while since the SHIELD TV came out — this feels like the perfect time to see a redux.
To be clear, NVIDIA’s current device already pulls off 4K and HDR content in apps like Netflix and YouTube, but a new version of SHIELD TV could bring us more versatility and better performance, especially if NVIDIA is looking to pack in MIMO-equipped 802.11ac WiFi speeds for those who want to stream the content over their home network without any issues.
They could also deliver games with higher fidelity, though we’re not sure if their mobile graphics technology is strong enough for that just yet. An increased emphasis on 4K will be all the reason NVIDIA needs to launch a new model, so we’ll be looking to see if that pans out once January 2017 hits.
