Marshmallow saw the biggest gains in OS adoption this month while Nougat inches forward
Google has dished out updated Android distribution numbers for the 7-day period ending December 5th. These numbers give us a good idea of the adoption rate for new versions of Android (though they’re intended more for developers’ sake than our side interests).
What happened in the month since the last update? Well, not a whole lot. Android 7.0 Nougat is still pretty rare, with the update only being accounted for on 0.4% of phones. This bunch is likely widely made up of the Pixel and Nexus devices out there, with a bit sprinkled in from the few other devices which have been updated in recent weeks.
None of this comes as a surprise, of course, as Google’s OSs often take a while to catch on. We suffered through much of the same with Marshmallow (which actually saw a 2.3% increase this period), and Lollipop, and KitKat, and so on.
Even all this time later, Lollipop still commands the most market share between Android 5.0 and Android 5.1 combined. This month brings them down a notch — an even 34% — but it’s still kicking along and likely won’t go away anytime soon. Thus is the life of an Android user, and if you haven’t accepted that by now then you should. (Or go out and buy yourself a Pixel.)
