With the end of the year coming closer, Google has revealed which apps and games, as well as various types of media, were the most popular globally this year. Localized lists are available if you’re interested in that data, but we’re only taking a peek at what the world loved on Google Play in 2016.
It’s really no surprise to see Pokemon Go at the top of the games list, as Niantic and Nintendo’s new augmented reality game has captured the attention of even non-gamers who now aspire to catch them all.
While the game had a rocky release, Niantic has been working on improving the experience for players. Some balance changes have been made in the months since release, as well as improvements to how the Pokemon tracker works to help players in their Pokemon searching. Perhaps the most popular update is the newly released Ditto, who camouflages himself on the map as Pidgey and Rattata.
Google also mentions which media was the best performing of 2016, with Deadpool taking both the movie and book categories. Game of Thrones barely edged out The Walking Dead as the most popular TV show, while Twenty One Pilot’s “Stressed Out” can claim the title of most streamed song of 2016.
