The Xiaomi Mi Mix is the flagship smartphone you’ve always wanted

At an event in Beijing, Xiaomi took the wraps off the Xiaomi Mi Note 2, Mi VR, and a device that is being touted as a “concept”. This “concept” device definitely stole the show and has the ability to steal our hearts, if it ever makes it to this side of the world.

There have been many of us who complain about new smartphones released with bezels that are ridiculous. They stick out like sores and can get in the way of an otherwise gorgeous design. We’ve seen Sharp provide devices with bezel-less designs, but these aren’t geared towards those who want the best specs as the Sharp devices are usually reserved for the mid-range/budget markets.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX changes all of that. The device features a 6.4-inch display, but there are almost NO bezels. Xiaomi is touting that the MIX is a concept device but will be coming to China on November 4th, proving that this isn’t much of a concept.

Xiaomi Mi MIX Specs:

  • 6.4-inch 2040 x 1080 Display (17:9 screen ratio)
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 821
  • 4GB/ 6GB RAM
  • 128GB/256GB Storage
  • 5MP Front Camera
  • 16MP Rear Camera
  • 4,400mAh Battery w/ Quick Charge 3.0
  • Fingerprint Sensor

What makes this device so special is what Xiaomi did to be able to make this bezel-less design come to reality. Starting with its body, the Mi MIX is made out of ceramic and is connected with seamless connectors to allow for manufacturers to not use any extra adhesives.

The MIX also doesn’t include an earpiece, instead, using a piece of technology known as “Cantilever piezoelectric ceramic acoustics”. This allows the user to listen to phone calls without the need for an actual earpiece. Xiaomi also didn’t include the traditional proximity sensor on the MIX, opting to use an ultrasonic proximity sensor which is “hidden behind the display”.

Finally, Xiaomi changed things up regarding the front facing camera. Instead of placing the camera on the top of the device, the front camera is actually placed in the bottom right-hand corner. This is an odd placement, but what is cool is that you will be able to flip the device upside down to take a proper selfie and the software recognizes what you are doing.

Xiaomi is offering up two different variants of the new Mi MIX once it comes to the market. The standard Mi MIX with its 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage will be priced at 3499 yuan (~$516), while the Mi MIX 18K and its 6GB of RAM and 256GB of storage is priced at 3999 yuan (~$590.)

Other than the RAM and storage options for the Mi MIX 18K, the device also features a fingerprint scanner, while the regular Mi MIX does not. Additionally, the Mi MIX 18K includes a gold plate edge around both the camera and fingerprint sensor. This is being touted as the “Exclusive” edition to help differentiate from the regular version.

There are many questions about the Mi MIX, such as how well will this phone hold up to daily usage with no bezel? I mean, if there are no bezels, did Xiaomi do something to the software to help combat accidental touches, or are we just going to be mistouching the screen all the time.

If you’re worried about this device just being a smoke screen for something else, a new hands-on video has appeared. The video shows off the new bezel-less design, as well as the software and how the front camera will work if you want to take a proper selfie.
