Xiaomi’s first mirrorless camera can sync with your smartphone
Xiaomi’s Yi brand has just unveiled its first mirrorless camera. Simply dubbed the M1, it’s a micro 4/3rds compact design which won’t necessarily best any higher-end options out there. It has a 20-megapixel sensor, max ISO level of 25,600, and doesn’t even have flash (you can mount an external one if you’d like) or a dedicated viewfinder.
But what it does have is a 12-40mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens, a package that comes at you for just $330. As with anything Xiaomi that isn’t strictly a phone, they’re going for a value proposition that’ll make you take notice on price tag alone. For comparison’s sake, alternative options range anywhere from $400 through $1,000.
Xiaomi will rely on a Bluetooth and WiFi connection to your phone if you want it to be any “smart.” We’re not sure how the camera is poised to operate with your phone just yet, but we imagine that, at the least, we’ll get automatic photo transfers so you can quickly and easily access them in your photo editing suite of choice later on. The device also has its own on-board display for operation and viewfinding purposes, but we’re not sure if its software will enable much beyond that. The camera will be available later this week.
