Huawei’s “Nexus 7P” might actually be a tablet
Shortly before HTC’s role in Google’s annual launch of pure Nexus (Pixel, now, actually) phones became apparent, we were hearing that Huawei was “doing the Nexus again.” Rumors of their participation were strengthened by a new device showing up on benchmark listings with a Snapdragon 820 chipset and 4GB of RAM.
And then we stopped hearing about it, with only the Nexus Marlin and Sailfish (now known as the Pixel and Pixel XL) being churned through the rumor mill. Did Huawei bow out? We’re not sure, but their plans for a repeat performance may actually have turned into plans for a Nexus tablet — the aptly-named Nexus 7P — according to Evan Blass.
Blass didn’t have any details about the tablet aside from the fact that it runs 4GB of RAM and is on track for release later this year. We’d love to assume the device will sport at least a Snapdragon 820 chipset to ensure strength in anything you want to do with it, but we aren’t ready to bet the farm on that.
Regardless, it’s exciting to hear that the company is finally ready to offer up another 7-inch tablet after a long drought since 2013’s Nexus 7. While that tablet was great and still continues to be a battle-hardened tool which is still receiving the latest versions of Android, we’re sure Google is eager to launch some new hardware to handle future applications like (potentially) Daydream VR. Let’s hope the wait to hear more won’t be too long.
