Emoji face-off: Android 6.0 Marshmallow vs Android 7.0 Nougat

We already knew Android 7.0 Nougat was going to bring a fresh new set of emoji to Android users, those that were hand picked out of the Unicode 9.0 release. Anyone who’s spent any length of time in the latest developer previews already got a chance to see them, but it’s only now that everything has been made official and finalized.

Goodbye Mr. Blob ?

In case anyone was wondering exactly what’s been changed, Emojipedia has provided us with a detailed look at the differences between the emoji found in Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and the new-school style in Android 7.0 Nougat. There are 72 all new additions, bringing the total number of emoji officially supported in Android up to 1,791. That’s a lot of tiny pictures. Here’s what’s new:

You’ll notice the thick drawn outlines found in previous years emoji have been trashed in favor of a more flat, uniform look. Most of the jobs and actions have been replaced with actual humans, with a skin tone modifier finally being added to change the appearance of one’s race. A few staples have also been updated, bringing them more in tune with those found on iOS to ensure the correct emotion is being translated as intended.

Notably absent are female variants for action/job emoji (something Google already voiced concerns about changing) and the controversial rifle emoji, which was once a part of the Unicode 9.0 release, but later removed after receiving pressure from Apple and Microsoft.

It’s also worth noting that because these emoji are not yet supported officially on iOS or apps like Facebook Messenger, they should be used sparingly as the recipient will receive little more than a blank box. Of course, it will be quiet sometime before you see these new emoji on your Samsung, HTC, Sony, or other devices as you’ll have to wait for a full system update before they can be added. Even then, they’ll look much different from the Google emoji you see here. Kind of a bummer.
