Nexus Marlin, Sailfish could launch as Google-branded smartphones in September

0

A new rumor out of India claims that two Google-branded smartphones will be unveiling in early September. The devices in question will go on sale later in the month in India and other countries. These devices are said to be equipped with a 5-inch and 5.5-inch displays and will feature 32GB and 128GB of internal storage. The devices will be running Android Nougat with the new Google Assistant as one of the “headline software features.”

The source of the rumor doesn’t claim the two devices are the Nexus Marlin and Nexus Sailfish, but it’s hard to imagine Google would have two other devices in development which appear to match up with the rumored 2016 Nexus smartphones. The fact that the phones will launch under Google’s brand also explains why we have heard rumors about the Nexus logo being replaced with a “G” on the back of the Marlin and Sailfish.

The two Google-branded devices will be positioned as premium devices in an effort to compete directly with Apple’s iPhone. The devices will also feature a “new mechanism for transferring data from the iPhone,” allowing for a smooth transition for those who decide to ditch their iPhone’s for one of Google’s new devices.

Do you think switching from Nexus to Google-branded phones is the right move for Google?

The Nexus Marlin/Sailfish design has more in common with the HTC Desire 10 Pro than the HTC 10
