Samsung Galaxy Note 7 and Gorilla Glass 5 undergo painful drop test [VIDEO]
The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is one of the first smartphones on the market to come equipped with Gorilla Glass 5. That’s sort of a big deal considering the phone is mostly covered in glass, with only a small metal frame protecting the device from falls on its edge. In the event that the glass does come into contact with pavement, Corning says Gorilla Glass 5 is capable of surviving drops onto “rough, unforgiving surfaces” four times better than the competition.
“In lab tests, Corning Gorilla Glass 5 survives up to 80 percent of the time when dropped face-down from 1.6 meters onto rough surfaces, far outperforming competitive glass designs.”
While that sounds pretty comforting, you might be asking yourself how well this translates into the real world? Well, YouTuber XEETECHCARE is putting those claims to the test and in case you thought the chemically treated glass was shatterproof — let me stop you right there. Just watch.
Surprisingly enough, the front of the phone emerged unscathed in a face-down drop test, while the back wasn’t so lucky. Keep in mind that both the front and back of the phone are using Gorilla Glass 5, so it just goes to show you that glass shatters no matter how much Gorilla-power it has. On the bright side of things, at least your chances of it coming out crack-free are 50/50, right?
