Here it is, folks: Kyocera’s latest rugged smartphone. It’s the Marshmallow-infused DuraForce Pro, and its makeup doesn’t quite tingle the tech geek nerves inside of us with this spec sheet:
But it isn’t supposed to. It’s supposed to survive your clumsiness or active lifestyle. The one spec we didn’t list — its camera — is where things get interesting. Kyocera fixated 2 cameras on the rear. One is your standard 13-megapixel shooter, but the other is what Kyocera is calling a Super Wide View Action Camera. It’s essentially just a wide-angle lens, the likes of which companies are starting to put on the front of their phones for selfies.
It has more to it than that, though, with Kyocera building an “underwater mode” that will deliver the best camera settings to use when you’re taking a dip. The phone also has built-in compatibility with popular action camera mounts.
All of that is pretty cool, though it comes off a bit gimmicky. Those serious about capturing their underwater or above ground adventures are likely to get a dedicated piece of equipment, but if you’re already in the market for a durable smartphone and want something for simple recreational needs then it doesn’t sound like a bad way to go. Look forward to its launch at some point later this year.
