The Galaxy Note 7 may prompt a redesigned Galaxy Gear VR headset

With the Galaxy Note 7 expected to be the first Samsung device with a USB Type-C charging port, that may cause some compatibility issues with the current generation of Samsung’s Gear VR headset. However a new listing from the Zauba import database shows that a new Gear VR may be in the works as a a new headset with the model number of “SM-R323” has entered India for testing.

New Gear VR Zauba

When looking back at the various model numbers from previous versions of the Gear VR, this latest version would fall right in line.

  • Innovator Edition for the Galaxy Note 4: SM-R320
  • Innovator Edition for the Galaxy S6: SM-R321
  • Current Consumer Edition: SM-R322

The need for a new Gear VR would be necessary considering that the current version would not be compatible with a USB Type-C device, so it makes sense for Samsung to release a new Gear VR. Additionally, based on the Zauba listing, the value of this new Gear VR is about $82 which would also lineup with the cost that we’ve seen from previous versions of the Gear VR. Based on previous leaks, we are expecting for Samsung to take the wraps off the Galaxy Note 7 on August 2nd. We could see Samsung introduce an updated Gear VR alongside the Note 7, and then set up some type of bundle offer for those looking to pre-order either device.
