Final Fantasy VII is now officially available on Android
It’s been 3 years since Square Enix said Final Fantasy VII on Android remained a “possibility” — and almost a full year since it launched on iOS — but today, the PlayStation classic that popped this blogger’s RPG cherry is officially available on the Google Play Store.
Priced at Square Enix’s usual $16 entry fee, the game features all the gameplay from the original that launched back in 1997, only better suited for mobile with touch controls, the ability to turn off enemy encounters, and even max our your stats in the options. Yeah, we’re not sure why they’d include that last one, but it could be good for players just looking to experience the story without all that difficulty getting in the way of things.
Square Enix warns that not all Android devices have been tested and are guaranteed to work with the the title. While that’s always a given, they note that even devices that have been tested still aren’t guaranteed to be bug-free and says you may run into the occasional “speed issue or bugs” depending on your device. They provided a URL with a list of officially supported Android devices, but it’s currently 404ing. Whenever it goes live, you can find it here.
Even for devices that are supported, they still note two odd bugs they haven’t been able to squash:
- Depending on the terrain and timing of the action, the buggy, submarines, airships, and other modes of transportation may cease to move when the player embarks or disembarks. Currently, the only fix is to restart the game from a data file saved before the bug occurred. We recommend saving frequently and/or utilizing multiple save files. This bug occurs most often when players embark or disembark while extremely close to the terrain, as well as during time-sensitive activities for events.
- Please note that the game will not save automatically when escaping from a battle on the world map, even if the Auto Save function is set to the ON setting.
Final Fantasy VII weighs in at about 2GB, with the listing recommending you have at least 4GB of free space for the rest of the game’s assets. All that being said, should you still feel brave enough to take the dive, you’ll find Square Enix’s latest re-release via the Play Store link below.
