Xiaomi to release $600 smartphone later this year
Xiaomi is known for releasing flagship-tier devices which sell for $250 to $300 less than what Samsung, LG, Sony and HTC typically charge for their top-of-the-line smartphones. While the company is planning to continue with that strategy, Liwan Jiang (one of Xiaomi’s co-founders) has revealed that we will see a 4,000 Yuan (roughly $599 USD) smartphone from Xiaomi sometime this year. For those keeping track, 4,000 Yuan is double of what the base Xiaomi Mi 5 is currently selling for.
Liwan Jiang didn’t go into detail regarding what would make the upcoming phone so expensive, but he did iterate that the device would offer more value than what the price implied (presumably when compared to the competition). Based on current rumors, Xiaomi is working on devices which feature curved displays and dual-cameras. Combining both features into to a single phone would certainly drive the price up, but Xiaomi will need to pack in even more tech in order to justify the price of the phone to maintain its value proposition.
