Acer’s store gets hacked leaving over 34,000 accounts compromised
It’s not too often that we see a breach in security from a smartphone/computer manufacturer, but it seems that’s exactly what happened to Acer. The company revealed to the California Attorney General that over 34,000 accounts have been compromised with information ranging from name and address to credit card information had fallen into the hands of hackers.
The breach occurred between May 12, 2015 an April 28, 2016, and was breached through the company’s “ecommerce site”. Here’s an excerpt from the notice that is getting sent to affected customers:
Based on our records, we have determined that your information may have been affected, potentially including your name, address, card number ending in [insert], expiration date and three-digit security codes. We do not collect Social Security numbers, and we have not identified evidence indicating that password or login credentials were affected.
It’s safe to say that you’ll be needing to get a new credit card if you are one of the affected users, but this does not bode well for Acer. Although the company recently revealed a new set of laptops and computers, users may want to stay away until everything gets rectified.
