Tinder has turned into much more than just a simple platform to meet potential dates. The service has, for some age ranges, turned into a way to quickly meet up with some around you for some tomfoolery. The company has recognized this and is doing something to change the age restrictions.
Currently, Tinder is available for anyone over the age of 13, but considering the potential mis-uses for the app, Tinder will be changing its stance on this starting next week. Instead of being able to sign up at the age of 13, users will now be required to be at least 18 years old to use Tinder.
In an official statement, Tinder VP of Communications Rosette Pambakian, explains why the company is making these changes:
On a platform that has facilitated over 11 billion connections, we have the responsibility of constantly assessing our different user experiences. Consistent with this responsibility, we have decided to discontinue service for under 18 users. We believe this is the best policy moving forward. This change will take effect next week.
For an app that has always been made to seem like a “hook-up” app, it’s a little questionable why Tinder waited so long to make these changes. Nonetheless, it’s still a smart move, and a way for the company to avoid any legal ramifications if something terrible were to happen. Of course, kids these days are smarter than their own good, so they will still figure out a way to circumvent the age limit and use Tinder anyways.
