4K phone-sized display panels are maturing. Display tech companies have been showing off small displays with 4K resolution in recent months, and it’s only a matter of time before these things start popping up inside smartphones as standard.
For Samsung, UBI Research thinks that is likely to happen starting with the Samsung Galaxy S8. Samsung showcased a 5.5-inch 4K display at past trade shows, and they expressed interest in getting 4K on smartphones before, so it’s not outside the realm of possibility.
The question is whether it is necessary to have such a sharp display. There are some considerable drawbacks:
But the big benefit for Samsung would be to have the sharpest display on the market for VR purposes. If the company does decide to go forward with it, there is a trade-off that’ll allow them to get the best of both worlds: only activate 4K mode for videos and VR content. Sony did something similar in the Xperia Z5 Premium.
Either way, a display innovation from Samsung seems due next year, so we’ll have to see what, exactly, they have up their sleeves.
