The western genre was popular through the 60s, 70s, and 80s for the gritty protagonists and badass action scenes. There aren’t a lot of westerns made these days, but occasionally we get a flashback to the classic films. Barking Irons is an Android game full of nostalgia. Not only does it harken back to spaghetti westerns, but it also utilizes the retro 8-bit design.
You play as Wes, the lawman of Barking Irons county. It’s your job to protect the county from outlaws. At your disposal is a trusty six-shooter and barrels and rocks for shields. To shoot the revolver you simply pull back the hammer by dragging your finger and releasing. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll feel like a regular ‘ol Clint Eastwood.
There are a few tricks that will help you defeat the outlaws and rack up more points. You can shoot multiple enemies with one shot to earn a combo when they are lined up. Perfect shots will also give you more points than shooting through an outlaw, which is easier to do. To protect yourself (and shield) from damage, you can shoot bullets out of the air.
Besides being really fun, Barking Irons also looks and sounds great. The retro 8-bit design is classic, and the western-themed music sets the mood perfectly. Everything comes together to give you the feeling of playing an old arcade game. Barking Irons is an endless shooter, so the real goal is to survive as long as possible and get a high score.
