Patent troll company is suing developers for using the Play Store

If you read about technology a lot, you’ve probably heard about “patent trolls.” These people claim ownership over general ideas and hope to win ridiculous cases against innocent people. An Android developer was recently sued by patent trolls and now he’s fighting back.

The developer is Austin Meyer. He created a flight simulator called X-Plane a few years ago and uploaded it to the Play Store. He was soon thereafter hit with a lawsuit from a firm that claims they patented the idea behind the app market. Instead of going after Google themselves (which would not end well), this firm is going after developers that use the Play Store.

Meyer decided to take the situation into his own hands and did some research. The firm is located in Eastern Texas, which happens to be where a lot of these patent troll lawsuits happen. It turns out that there is a judge in Eastern Texas that is known for almost never throwing out patent lawsuits. Unfortunately, the case is ongoing and costing Meyer a lot of money. He hopes the video above will bring some light to a dark situation.
