When Google and their partner retailers discontinued the Nexus Player, we thought it was a sign that the company was looking to sunset the line, leaving the only TV products available on the Google Store being the NVIDIA SHIELD TV and the Chromecast. While we still aren’t sure about the fate of the Nexus Player line, some activity at the FCC gives us a glimmer of hope that not all is lost.
An updated listing for the device seems to indicate that a refreshed model is making its way out of the oven. Strangely enough, it bears the same FCC ID number, however the updated listing does seem to show changes to the device’s WiFi antenna layout, as well as updated circuit layouts in general.
Does this mean we’ll see a brand new Nexus Player soon? It’s tough to say. For starters, this could only be a variation of the model that folks already have. It’s not uncommon to have different hardware revisions of the same product line. Since the FCC doesn’t mention any changes in regards to other functional specs then it’s up in the air as to whether this is part of the same bloodline or something new.
For what it’s worth, though, we typically don’t see Google and retailers removing devices from their online storefronts unless those devices are absolutely done being sold, so our bet is either it is a new device, or it’s a variation of the old device that didn’t make its way out in time. Either way, we’re keeping our eyes peeled for any movement on that front.
