Nintendo’s foray into mobile apps for Android and iOS got off to a good start with the launch of Miitomo. The app has been downloaded over 10 million times since its debut in mid-March, making it one of the most popular mobile apps of 2016. While the buzz around the app has not quite faded, new analytics from SurveyMonkey Intelligence shows that most users are only playing Miitomo 2.4 times per week. What’s even worse is that the app’s weekly churn rate is higher than 50%. This means that more than half of the people who play Miitomo this week will not even open the app next week.
Miitomo may be a victim of its own success. Millions of people downloaded the app simply because of the Nintendo name. If the downloads rate for the app would have been slower, the social aspect of the game would have matured and grown organically. Then again, Miitomo doesn’t really have much to offer unless you have a lot of friends to play with. The fact that Nintendo got 10 million people to download an app that’s not very compelling, shows that there are a lot of people waiting to pounce on anything that Nintendo puts out.
Are you still using Miitomo on a regular basis? Which of Nintendo’s titles are you hoping will make their way to Android within the next 12 months?
