Watch Samsung’s rollable/foldable OLED display in action

We’re still a ways off from the launch of the Samsung Galaxy X, but Samsung showed up at SID 2016 in San Francisco this week to show off its latest flexible display technology. The 5.7-inch 1080p flexible display is only 0.3mm thick with a weight of 5 grams without a touch layer. The demo shows the OLED panel scrolling out of a metal cylinder that resembles an old film cartridge. The rolling radius of the OLED panel is 10R, allowing it to be rolled into cylinders with a 10mm radius.

Samsung did not comment on any upcoming products which will be using its flexible display technology, but rumor has it that the Samsung Galaxy X will be launching in 2017 with a 4K display which will allow the device to fold in half like a wallet. Samsung originally teased this concept at CES in 2013, but it looks like the technology may finally be mature enough that Samsung could deliver a phone with a foldable display within the next 12-18 months.
