Benson Leung’s infamous shun of the HTC 10 and LG G5 to any USB Type-C purists had a lot of people stepping back from their plans to purchase the devices, but at least one of these phones may find its way back into the good graces of the community. The LG G5 is supposedly USB Type-C spec-compliant, after all.
GTrusted performed a deeper test on the LG G5’s USB Type-C port, and their findings show that the device does, in fact, support USB Power Delivery over USB Type-C 3.1. Leung’s former suspicion to the contrary came due to the device’s use of Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 being the primary quick charging technology being used in the device. That’s the same reason Qualcomm-based Nexus phones excluded the feature.
So, what does all this mean? Not only might an LG G5’s USB Type-C port be safe from a physical incident, it may be fully capable of carrying out some of the more exciting features enabled by USB Type-C, including its ability to act as a DisplayPort.
Unfortunately, he isn’t willing to give it the full green light without having done some tests himself, however it’s a promising development that we hope will result in good news down the line.
