Motorola gets slapped with a $5 million class-action lawsuit over questionable warranty fulfillment

Last week, Motorola confessed to their warranty department’s excessive delays in getting warranty claims properly situated. Some people experienced severe delays in getting their devices fixed, while others were seemingly asked to accept a lesser product instead of the original product they paid for.

Well, things are heating up. Motorola’s being sued in a $5 million class-action lawsuit in Illinois. The lawsuit is being headed up Girard Gibbs LLP on behalf of plaintiffs like Doug Lynch, a Reddit user who had input to offer in the original Reddit thread where complaints started to form.

In Lynch’s particular case, Motorola reportedly suggested they could not replace his watch as a similar model was unavailable. The company then found a replacement, but to his dismay it was a leather model of the smart watch as opposed to the stainless steel one he sent them. Needless to say, he wasn’t happy.

A $5 million class-action lawsuit (a number which one of the lawyers involved says could rise even higher) suggests that the line of customers wronged by Motorola’s warranty department is very long. It doesn’t help that they’ve tried to sweep the issue under the rug with a cheeky apology and a statement that they’ll do better, something we imagine wouldn’t have even happened until Motorola realized that they were breaking several warranty laws in the US.
