Google teams up with Uber, Ford, Lyft and Volvo to help bring self-driving cars to the road
So, the technology for self-driving vehicles is there, and it’s proven to be relatively safe. The next step is testing, and Google’s doing a lot of that. After that, they’ll use the results from those exhaustive tests to form reports about the viability, safety, and benefits of the technology.
And those reports will be used to convince lawmakers to let self-driving vehicles on the road. That’s why the company has formed the Self-Driving Coalition for Safer Streets. It’s a group that currently consists of Google, automakers Ford and Volvo, and carpooling services Lyft and Uber.
Leading the group as spokesman and counsel will be David Strickland, former head of the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That’s some serious clout for Google to have, and with top automakers in the US and Europe in their corner they are poised to make some serious headway in achieving their goal.
