Samsung may have accidentally revealed Android N’s version number
Google I/O 2016 officially kicks off late next month and while Google will be busy showing off tons of new technologies and APIs for developers to tap into, Android is sure to be a big focus. Last month Google made the surprise move of announcing the next version of Android before their actual developer event, launching it as part of an open beta program anyone with a Nexus device can partake in.
Known only as “Android N” in its current early state, we don’t yet have an official “tasty treats” name or even a version number — until now. It seems Samsung may have inadvertently let the cat out of the bag, specifically mentioning the version number inside the recent release notes for their MultiWindow SDK. According to Samsung, Android N will launch as Android 7.0, a number that, well, quite frankly doesn’t mean much.
In the past, Android version numbers weren’t easy to guess, sometimes moving up entire points, or tenths of a point for new versions depending on how “big” the update was (Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich then Android 4.4 KitKat, for instance). If Samsung isn’t merely guessing here, this could signal the beginning of Google keeping things simple by moving up entire points for every major Android release. Now the real fun can begin: guessing the actual food name.
