Chrome Beta update

Latest update to Chrome Dev removes the ability to “merge tabs and apps”

Google has just pushed an update to the Chrome Dev build within the Play Store that removes a fairly controversial feature. Over the past few updates, Google has now removed the default functionality of merging your open browser tabs with your recent apps. Instead, the Chrome Beta and regular Chrome apps are defaulted to keeping all of your open webpages tucked within the Chrome app.

The Chrome Dev build, which is the most experimental version of Chrome, has just been updated which removes the ability to merge your open tabs with the recent apps drawer completely. Google hasn’t made a comment on whether this is a permanent change, but it’s still interesting to see changes being made.

It’s also important to remember that the Chrome Dev is designed to be used by developers to test new features to make sure they are compatible with whatever Google has in the pipeline. However, if this a sign of things to come, it’s a bit surprising.

Back when the option was added, it was a fairly controversial one, and one that is still seemingly split between those who love the ability to have everything in their recent apps, and those who want Chrome’s tabs to stay within Chrome. Regardless, it’ll be fun to see how this plays out going forward.
