LG says their modular smartphone design will be used for future products
Worried that the LG G5 and its modules are one-off tricks instead of a long term design philosophy? That’s something that crossed our minds more than a few times when we first heard about the device, and we’d hoped that the phone and its various “friends” (the extension modules you put into its Magic Slot bay) wouldn’t be subject to life as mere novelties.
No, instead LG says this is their future. Speaking to The Verge, senior designer for LG Lee Jung-hoon — who had a heavy hand in the LG G5’s design — said the following:
We have to evolve, we have to improve. We are not going to stop with this.
Vague generalization regarding innovation or a hard confirmation that the Magic Slot is here to say? LG says it’s the latter, and we should expect to see it in future smartphones going forward.
Of course, there will be many more questions from here on out. Will they look to do this on all their flagships? Will the modules be device agnostic or will we have to buy new ones whenever we upgrade? Will there be more than a Hi-Fi audio attachment, a camera grip and a removable battery?
Those questions aren’t being answered today, and understandably so. Today is all about the LG G5, which fortunately could start landing on doorsteps as soon as today.
