Verizon ended Verizon Edge so they could reintroduce it as the new Annual Upgrade Program
We had to take a double-take at Verizon’s announcement today. The company announced a new annual upgrade program that lets you upgrade to new smartphones every year, so long as you pay at least 50% of your device payments by the date you’re eligible to upgrade (which would happen in roughly 12 months if you’re on a 24-month payment plan and don’t make more than the minimal payments). You could even decide to upgrade as soon as a month after buying a phone as long as you pay up to that 50% mark.
That sounds just like what Verizon Edge was… before they dropped the Edge name and required you to make 100% of your payments before upgrading to a new smartphone instead of 50%. Verizon’s announcement makes it sound like this plan only applies to the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, but they were only using those phones as the hot ticket item for explaining how it works.
In actuality, you can enroll in this program and upgrade to any new smartphone after a year instead of having to stick with the Samsung gang. Those who pre-ordered the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are automatically signed up for this new option (which you shouldn’t have an issue with since it’s infinitely better than the old one), and anyone else who wants to enroll can do so when they buy their next smartphone. Now let’s hope Verizon doesn’t yet again yank this from beneath our feet when we get used to it.
