Hands-on with the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge
Count Samsung in as another manufacturer who’s digging LED more than holes these days. Folks picking up the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge can opt to pass on the traditional S-View folio case for the LED model you see below.
The case elegantly lights up arrays of pixels to communicate whatever information it is that it needs to communicate, whether that’s a look at battery life, where your volume is set when you’re adjusting it, and the time. It can’t do much more (you can only show so much in LED), but it’s a nice effect that saves you the time it would take to turn the display on to see that stuff proper. Of course, with the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge getting always-on displays you probably won’t have to worry about that.
Build material for the case seems to be some kind of faux-leather material. It doesn’t feel or look as good as real leather, but it does its job well enough. The case features a cutout for the earpiece so you can talk on the phone without having it open. It also covers up your volume buttons, but features nice indicators to show you where to press for easy adjustment.
Swinging the flap open, you’ll notice an area for storing credit cards, identification or whatever else you’d want to use it for. The phone is held in place by translucent tabs that grip the phone at the corners, so it does offer a bit of drop protection for those accidental drops here and there (just don’t go slamming the thing onto pavement like people seemingly love to do). The case is a bit pricey at $40, but you get a nice blend of function, form and style so you might find it worth the dollars.
