There’s been a lot of talk lately about Google’s next version of the Cardboard VR headset. Rumors suggest that a “Cardboard++” headset will be a much more powerful VR device. We don’t know when that headset will be ready, but we do know where you can get an elevated Google Cardboard device on the cheap right now.
The DSCVR headset was shown off at CES this year. It’s made by I AM CARDBOARD, an official supporter of Google Cardboard. The DSCVR ditches the cardboard for more sturdy plastic and silicone. It can fit any phone from a phablet to an iPhone. The headset has a cool compact spring-loaded design. Just press a button and the eye-flaps spring out. This is not your typical Cardboard device.
AndroidArea has the DSCVR for $24.99, which is $5 off the $30 price tag you’ll find on I AM CARDBOARD’s store. If you’re looking for something a little bit better than Google Cardboard, but don’t want to spend an arm and a leg, this is a nice little device.
- 34 mm biconvex lenses provide a clear view of the action
- The headset is large enough to accommodate a wide range of phone models and sizes- up to Nexus 6 and iPhone 6 Plus-sized units.
- The conductive button is similar to the one in Google Cardboard V2 kits, but with upgraded materials. Works on both Android and iOS phones.
- The silicone flap has a grippy surface that prevents your phone from – gasp – ever slipping out.
- To make it even more roadworthy, all units come with a durable travel case.
