Another day, another app (seemingly) wrongfully removed from Google Play. Podcast Addict — a popular app on Google Play — was dismayed to learn their app had been stricken down due to a terms of use violation.
The violation, according to Google, referred to the company’s policy against sexually explicit material, which is certainly something that a podcast app could be susceptible to. We’re not sure of the full details regarding the exact circumstances, but one of two things probably took place here:
- Podcast Addict’s suggestion engine inadvertently pulled a podcast with sexually explicit descriptions or images.
- Someone went searching for a podcast, came up on the wrong listing and reported the app.
Podcast Addict seems to contend that they don’t do anything in their app that should pull any explicit content on its own. If true, they have a very valid argument: web browsers, news apps and even social networking apps can be used to view sexually explicit content, so why would it be any different for something like a podcast app?
That’d be like banning the Google Chrome app because it can be used to search for porn. Sounds pretty silly when you put it that way, doesn’t it? Let’s hope Google doesn’t take long to help get this sorted out.
