We’ve been patiently waiting for the HTC Vive to go on sale every since our first mind-blowing experience. Today, HTC has finally announced that they will start taking pre-orders on February 29th. This comes just days after the Oculus Rift finally went up for pre-order. HTC still has not shared pricing information, but they did say the device will go up for a wider sale in April.
Last week at CES, HTC revealed the second generation of Vive. HTC introduced a slightly new design for the head unit that emphasizes comfort. You’ll get interchangeable foam inserts and nose gaskets, a more steady fit thanks to improved strap design, and a better display with more brightness and clarity. They also refined the adjustment mechanisms to be able to comfortably fit any face, even those who wear glasses.
The other big addition to the head unit is a front-facing camera, which can be used to view surroundings while your headset is on, or even serve up new immersive experiences driven by the camera. Finally, the controller got redesigned to be more comfortable. The trigger is now dual-staged for finger control, and vibrations should help drive immersion home. The controllers are now rechargeable and last for 4 hours on a single charge.
Will you be pre-ordering the Vive next month? What price would it have to be to get your attention? Do you think the Vive will cost more than the Oculus Rift?
