Samsung announces Rose Gold and Platinum editions of the Gear S2 Classic; iOS support coming later this year

Samsung’s CES 2016 press conference wasn’t too heavy on the mobile and wearable news, but we did learn about some exciting new developments in-store for the Gear S2 Classic. For starters, they’ve revealed the premium Rose Gold and Platinum color options for those who want something that looks a bit more classy on their wrists.

They’re the same Gear S2 Classics we’ve seen since they were originally announced, only they look worlds better. The devices will ship with genuine leather bands — Ivory for Rose Gold, and Black for Platinum — though they can be swapped out for premium bands from designers like Colombo, and even fun stuff like bands with Peanuts characters. We’re told to look to February for their launch.

But that wasn’t the only news — Samsung has confirmed plans to bring iOS support for the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic, noting that it’d be available by the end of the year. It’s a huge step for Samsung who has been in tussles with Apple for more than half a decade now.

That doesn’t matter, though: iOS has users, and Samsung wants to tap into as many of those users as they can by opening up their smart watch platform. Details on how the support would be implemented weren’t mentioned, but we’re sure those details will be offered up as we inch closer to launch. As for the new Gear S2 Classic models? Stay tuned for some hands-on coverage.
