We already knew Google was in talks with auto manufacturers to try and get their self-driving vehicle tech ready for consumers, but we weren’t exactly sure how they were looking to get in bed with. A new rumor from Yahoo Autos suggests that first company is the automobile industry innovator known as Ford.
The two will apparently come together on a CES stage to announce the deal. While terms of the partnership aren’t yet fully clear, there’s a good bet that it involves Ford using Google’s technology to deliver the new class of vehicles.
Ford has already seemingly been at work on their own system behind the scenes so they aren’t just latching onto Google’s coattails. There’s an opportunity for both sides to learn here, and with the two most experienced brains in their respective industries coming together there’s also a chance for something great to spawn as a result.
The deal between Google and Ford is said to be non-exclusive, meaning there’s a chance Google will have other partners to announce at the show or some point down the line. With self-driving technology said to be consumer-ready by 2020 we’re not surprised Google and other automakers working on the tech are ready to take it to the next level. The only question is what that next level will be, and it’s something we hope will be revealed whenever this supposed announcement takes place in the next few weeks.
