Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 830 could support up to 8GB of RAM

We’re still awaiting the arrival of the Snapdragon 820, but new rumors suggest Qualcomm is already hard at work on figuring out how to impress the tech world with the Snapdragon 830. According to a rumor originating from Chinese social network Weibo, Qualcomm’s big feat with the Snapdragon 830 will be to support up to 8GB of RAM.

To date, the norm for most consumer devices is nowhere past 4GB, though for devices like phones and tablets that hasn’t been much of an issue — that’s more than enough for mobile computing, and 2GB is seen as enough for these devices (depending on who you ask or which phone you have). So why jump up to 8GB?

Because they can. As the need for mobile technology grows, we will eventually need devices that can provide a computing experience on the go just as powerful as one that can be had at home. We already have devices suitable for most average users’ needs, but with folks in the professional world who may need more power on-the-go — such as photo, audio or video editors — Qualcomm and other vendors won’t rest until we have supercomputers in our pockets.

For now, though, we’re just hoping the Snapdragon 820 will come to market without any of the issues that marred the Snapdragon 810, something we feel good about considering big-time manufacturers who make their own chips in-house like Samsung are said to be back on board.
