While those of us with 2015 flagships have our eyes firmly set on Marshmallow, it’s easy to forget that many previous years flagships — those that launched back in 2014 — are still waiting for their updates to the later versions of Lollipop. Hitting the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Samsung Galaxy Note Edge on T-Mobile is Android 5.1.1, set to rollout to devices starting today.

According to the support pages that went live today, T-Mobile says the Note 4 will jump to software version N910TUVU2DOK2 or N910T3UVU1DOK2, with the Note Edge moving up to N915TUVU2COK2. Aside from the usual Lollipop improvements and the bug fixes that come in just about every update, T-Mobile goodies like Advanced Messaging and Video Calling are also coming along for the ride.

T-Mobile announced Advanced Messaging back in July of this year, but few devices supported it. Built on the Rich Communications Services standard (RCS for short), Advanced Messaging brings the convenience of instant messaging with features like the ability to see when others are typing, when messages have been read, high-res photo sharing up to 10MB in size, and is built to work across all devices, operating systems, and even carriers once the rest get on board. It’s been a long time coming, but it’s nice to see carriers (well, T-Mobile anyway), finally upgrade from the now archaic SMS protocol.

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.
