Cyanogen has announced the rollout of Marshmallow-based CyanogenMod 13 nightlies for the lucky owners of 7 devices. Those who have the OnePlus One, Nexus 7, LG G4, Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4, LG G Pad 7.0, Verizon’s LG G3 and the Moto X 2014 can get an early taste of what’s to come.
If you don’t know, a nightly is a snapshot build that includes all of the latest changes and work done on the ROM. They come out nearly ever night (hence the name) and contain cutting edge changes and features as they get pushed to the source tree. Because of this, nightlies can’t be recommended for daily use because there’s a chance that some newly-pushed code could create undesirable results — you’ll want to stick to release candidates and stable releases if you want to ensure there are no issues.
That said, we can’t recall a nightly that was so bad that you couldn’t use it for an extended period of time, and should you come across issues it’s just as easy to roll back to a stable ROM. Knowing that, if you want to check out CyanogenMod’s early efforts on Marshmallow and are lucky enough to have one of the devices above, be sure to head to the download site here and grab your .zip file. Cyanogen says that devices on 12.1 builds can “dirty flash” the files, meaning you won’t have to do a full wipe.
That said, if you have any addons and modules — such as exposed — it’s highly reocmmended that you also flash Marshmallow-compatible versions of those addons immediately after flashing CyanogenMod to avoid any issues. Furthermore, they note that there may be “unofficial” CyanogenMod 13 builds starting to come out, so if you are opting to go with one of those then you’ll want to do a clean wipe before installing.
Finally, CyanogenMod suggests those who don’t want the potential pitfalls of nightly releases simply stay on 12.1 until January, when they expect the first stable releases to begin rolling in. Decide you want it? Give it a go if you have the proper device, know-how and understanding.
