If you’re clutching your OnePlus One or OnePlus 2 with hopes to have Marshmallow on it by the end of the year, it’s time to retire those expectations. The company has come out to confirm that their Marshmallow upgrades won’t happen until Q1 2016. That could mean any time between January 1st and March 31st as OnePlus didn’t offer any further estimates.
It’s worth noting that this timeline doesn’t apply to the OnePlus X, though that doesn’t necessarily mean it can’t eventually receive the same estimate. It’s also worth noting that the company is only promising a Q1 window for Cyanogen OS users. While a Marshmallow-based Oxygen OS may be ready in that same time frame, they haven’t yet detailed any plans regarding its development or availability.
In the meantime, OnePlus says they’ll continue to roll out maintenance upgrades for Oxygen OS, and while they originally had plans to open up a fingerprint scanner API for the OnePlus 2, they’ll opt to wait for Marshmallow in order to implement Android’s new built-in functionality instead. Keep an eye out for more from the company in the weeks and months ahead.
