Not only is today one of Android’s many birthdays, but it’s also the start of a brand new month. That means Android’s Platform Distribution numbers have officially been updated for the month November. These numbers — which are taken only from active devices that have recently pinged the Google Play Store — show us the current state of Android as it relates to rolling out firmware versions. While this isn’t technically in Google’s hands, it does give us a general progress report to b*tch and moan about.
This month we’re finally seeing the debut of Google’s latest dessert: Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Before you get too excited, it’s barely accounting for .3% of total Android devices. But hey, at least it’s something. Other numbers include Lollipop — which is now officially a year old — on the rise, now on 25.6% of devices, while KitKat and others are now on a slow decline. We’re guessing this means those devices are either being updated, or simply being retired in favor of newer devices running later versions of Android.
It’ll be interesting to see Marshmallow’s adoption moving forward. OEMs weren’t all too thrilled about updating devices to the mostly buggy release that was Android 5.0 Lollipop, but Marshmallow is looking much more solid this time around. You can check out last month’s official numbers here.
