ASUS Chairman: ZenFone 3 will feature USB Type-C

ASUS Chairman Jonney Shih today confirmed the existence of the ASUS ZenFone 3. It was in nonchalant manner, apparently — perhaps the CEO is tired of pretending we don’t know about their plans well before they’re ready to make formal announcements.

The CEO even had some early information to spill about specs by confirming that the ZenFone 3 would feature USB Type-C. That’s good news as the standard has gotten high praise by nearly every techie out there, and is being championed by top tech companies like Google and Apple.

The inclusion of USB Type-C ports might seem like a luxury that’s reserved for high-end devices right now, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the ZenFone 3 will fall into that class. It could be that ASUS is simply interested in supporting and pushing the standard. In fact, that’s exactly their goal, as the CEO confirmed that the inclusion of USB Type-C is worth its cost in the value it brings to the user experience. Here’s how he put it, said in context:

Of course you know now the cost, right? For ZenFone, each cent counts right? But we never only think about the cost. We always think about the cost and the value at the same time. So I think it’s more a timing issue, frankly speaking. Yeah, what’s the right timing?

We normally want to be a little bit ahead. But if you’re too much ahead, then sometimes it may be a disaster, right? So that’s our strategy. We’re still not like Apple. [Apple] can always try to lead in a very aggressive way.

We would like to be more aggressive than other competitors, but sometimes we also need to be a little bit practical. Make the trade-off, frankly speaking.

He’s all but confirming the ZenFone 3 won’t be some crazy futuristic device with all the bells and whistles, but they will go the extra mile in certain important areas to make sure the user experience is top-notch. A USB Type-C chip certainly does a lot in helping to achieve that goal.
