With a brand new update out and two hot phones on the way to champion it, we’d say an update to the Google Play Store is starting to feel a bit overdue. Thankfully it looks like Google has been hard at work on that behind the scenes.
A Googler took to Google+ to give us a sneak peek at what’s to come. The first thing that draws eyes is the new Google logo inside the search box. It’s a subtle change, but a noticeable one nonetheless.
Looking beneath the search bar reveals a carousel area. The old one doesn’t look bad by any stretch of the imagination, but the new one should do a better job of drawing attention to the hottest and newest apps and games on Google Play.
From there, we can see that Google did away with the columns of categories and instead split everything between two overarching sides: Apps & Games, and Entertainment. The former is self-explanatory: nothing but apps and games there. Everything else — like Music, Movies, Books and Newsstand subscriptions — can be found under Entertainment. This should make for a more sensible layout, and gives more types of content the chance to shine up front and center without the user having to drill down into specific areas of the app.
Unfortunately that’s all we’ll get in terms of an early look, but if a Google feels comfortable enough to show us the goods then we imagine the update is nearly ready to be pushed out to everyone. Let the wait begin.
