iPhone 6S takes a back seat to Android flagships in DxOMark’s latest mobile camera rankings
With many of this year’s Android flagships topping DxOMark’s mobile camera ratings (with the exception of the HTC One M9 of course), it’s safe to say that we’ve finally arrived. What do we mean? Well, after years’ of putting up with inconsistent, lackluster camera hardware constantly taking a back seat to iPhone’s, it seems OEMs are finally taking camera quality seriously. It’s gotten so serious that Apple’s latest and greatest — the iPhone 6S — was finally added to DxOMark’s ratings and you wont believe where it ranked.
Despite Apple upgrading the phone’s camera with a 12MP “state-of-the-art sensor,” new image signal processor, and something they call “Focus Pixels,” the phone wasn’t any better off because of it. In fact, it took the #10 spot, just under last year’s iPhone 6 (although the final scores were the same). Here are the top 10 smartphones cameras according to DxOMark:

- Google Nexus 6P
- LG G4
- Samsung Galaxy Note 4
- Motorola Moto X Style
- Sony Xperia Z3 Plus
- Apple iPhone 6 Plus
- Apple iPhone 6
- Apple iPhone 6S
Keep in mind these results aren’t exactly definitive and while we don’t always see eye-to-eye with DxOMark’s controlled testing, it does serve as a good base. You’ll also notice a few glaring omissions like the Galaxy Note 5 or the iPhone 6S Plus (which has OIS and should make for a better overall score), so expect some shuffling in the coming weeks.
Now we get it, just because the iPhone 6S placed in the 10th spot doesn’t mean that the camera is garbage. That’s not what we’re saying at all. It’s just that Android has come a long way since the Galaxy Nexus and it finally opens up the argument that maybe — just maybe — the iPhone is no longer the undisputed king of smartphone photography. With a Nexus of all devices actually taking the #3 spot, we think that’s saying a whole lot.
