At the event for the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X there was a lot of talk about the cameras. Previous Nexus phones left a lot to be desired in the camera department, especially the Nexus 5. Now, both phones are equipped with 12.3MP shooters. This new imaging sensor is made by Sony. It has larger 1.55-micron pixels to capture more light, f/2.0 aperture, and laser auto-focus system.
While these camera specs are very impressive, they don’t tell the whole story. You really can’t tell how good a camera is until you see some real-world photos from it. Google has provided some sample photos from both the Nexus 6P and 5X, and we also were able to take a few photos of our own. Let’s see how they look.

It’s not hard to see a difference between Google’s shots and ours. Obviously, Google set up the conditions to work well in their favor, so they got some remarkable results. Our photos don’t look quite as nice, but we were in a small room with dim lighting. Still, our photos look much improved over what we’ve seen from Nexus devices in the past. DxOMark, an image quality reference, gave the Nexus 6P the #2 ranking on their site, only behind the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
What do you think of these photos? Does the Nexus finally have a good camera?
