4 best Nexus 6P & 5X features according to the Google team that made them

Four members of the team behind the new Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X took part in an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit. They spilled the goods on why the devices don’t have wireless charging, and what the heck “P” and “X” stand for. The next question they answered was about their favorite features of the two phones. Granted, these guys are a bit biased, but their favorite features say a lot.

Nexus Imprint

It is fast (it really is!) and highly accurate. You won’t even see the lockscreen anymore. And the location of the sensor is such that you will get right in your homescreen by the time phone is in front of you. Check out some hands-on videos around this.

Nexus Imprint is the software that goes with the fingerprint sensor on the back of both phones. Google says it takes 600 milliseconds to recognize a fingerprint, and it gets better the more you use it. Imprint can be used for unlocking your phone, Android Pay, and even verification in 3rd party apps.

Cameras

The camera on these devices is great – the picture quality is awesome – especially for low light pictures. Sloooomo on these devices is a lot of fun.

It’s no surprise they love the cameras on these devices. Google talked them up a lot during the event. Both are equipped with 12.3MP cameras. They feature the same Sony sensor with f/2.0 optics, but the 6P can do a few extra things. Since it has more horsepower, it can do 240fps slow-motion and smartburst. Check out our sample photos to see how the cameras perform.

USB Type-C

You might be wondering what’s so exciting about a USB cable. Have you ever tried to plug your phone in the wrong way before? Of course you have. USB Type-C cables are reversible. It doesn’t matter which orientation you plug it in. USB Type-C is also much faster, thanks in part to Fast Charging. Google says you can get 7 hours of battery life in just 10 minutes.

Build Quality

I think the “premiumness” of both phones is my fav feature. Particularly loving the all-metal aluminium – I mean alum-in-um – and the diamond cut edges of the 6P :)

The Nexus series has not always been blessed with the best hardware. The original Nexus 5 was pretty generic-looking, and it was made of soft-touch plastic. The Nexus 4 looked great, but the glass back was easy to break. Last year’s Nexus 6 started a trend of great build quality that the 6P and 5X has followed. The 5X is still generic, but it feels better The 6P is all aluminum, and it just screams premium.
